about us

reviving the skates

LEGACY (1993 - 1996)
The Oakland Skates weren't just a hockey team; they were a cultural moment. As a flagship franchise of Roller Hockey International (RHI), they played at the Oakland Coliseum Arena and brought punk rock energy to Bay Area sports. They were loud, colorful, and accessible.

FROM THE BAY, FOR THE BAY
By updating the Skates’ brand, we revive a piece of Oakland sports history and give it new life. The name Skates subtly ties us to the Sharks and Barracuda — keeping Bay Area hockey rooted in the water that defines our region.

the Mountain hockey league (MHL)

The Skates are a Senior A hockey team. We will play our exhibition season against Mountain Hockey League teams in 2026, and we will officially join the MHL as an expansion team in 2027.

This is not rec-league play. It is full-contact, NHL-regulation hockey featuring high-level talent.

Games are streamed live on YouTube Live, ensuring visibility beyond the arena.
